Sindh Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir and former lawmaker Muhammad Hussain Mahenti condemned police “brutality” against political workers who were protesting in Karachi on Saturday against the alleged rigging in General Election 2024.
Police baton-charged and arrested several workers belonging to the Grand Democratic Alliance, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl, JI and other parties involved in the protest campaign predominantly against the Pakistan Peoples Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement -Pakistan.
Mehanti said that today in the city of Karachi, the rulers who claim to be democratic have broken all records of fascism and dictatorship. He commented, “The way the police baton-charged the workers, dragged the women and threw them into police vans after raining kicks and punches is a shameful stain on the Sindh government and the PPP.”
He added, “It is the constitutional and fundamental right of everyone to protest peacefully against rigging and fraudulent elections, but tear gas was heavily shelled against the peaceful protest, dozens of workers were arrested and roads were blocked by setting up pickets here and there, as if an external aggressor force had attacked the city of Karachi.”
The JI leader maintained that this is the fear of the fake rulers and the fear of releasing the false results of those who have robbed the public mandate. He added that protest is a democratic right of every individual in this country and no power can force them to accept the fake elections through arrests and harassment.
He asked, “Where is the justice in resorting to state oppression and violence against those who are demanding their right, the rule of law and accepting the public mandate?”
The JI Sindh Emir demanded of the chief justice of the Sindh High Court to take notice of the “excesses” of the caretaker government and order the release of the arrested workers.
He said that the bias of the Election Commission of Pakistan and the facilitation of the “PDM Plus” are now fully evident. He added that a judicial commission should be constituted to investigate all the disputed seats and the protesting parties should get their right back.
He asserted, “Otherwise, the government that has robbed the mandate of other parties would not last long.”
