A police head constable was shot dead, apparently in an act of target killing, in District Central on Tuesday.
The incident occurred in the New Karachi area within the limits of Bilal Colony police station, where assailants killed 48-year-old constable Waheed, son of Tariq Pervaiz. The police stated that the cop was posted to Security I and was assigned to the security of a judge as a gunman.
The head constable, while leaving his home for duty on Tuesday morning, was targeted by unidentified armed assailants, according to the police. Two empty shells of 9mm pistols were recovered from the scene.
The constable sustained critical injuries after being shot in the head and was transferred to a private hospital on National Stadium Road. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment. At the time of the incident, the constable was in plainclothes. Prior to this, he had been posted to Khawaja Ajmair Nagri and Bilal Colony police stations.
The police investigators were reviewing CCTV footage, and geo-fencing was also being conducted. Although the police called the incident as an act of target killing, the motive behind the incident was yet to be ascertained.
According to the victim’s family, he had been serving with a judge for the past three years, and they claimed that he had no known threats. The family further stated that as soon as he left the home on Tuesday morning, the suspects targeted and killed him near his house. The police registered a case and initiated further investigations.
