WANA: Like many other areas of the country, independent candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have secured all the three seats, i.e. one national and two provincial assembly constituencies, in both Lower and Upper South Waziristan districts during the general elections.
Based on unofficial results from 182 polling stations, Zubair Khan Wazir, an independent candidate supported by PTI, emerged victorious in NA-42. Zubair clinched the top spot with 20,022 votes, followed by independent candidate Ali Wazir with 16,194 votes, and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUIF) candidate Maulana Jamal Uddin Mehsud securing the third position with 13,907 votes.
In Lower South Waziristan’s PK-110, the PTI-backed Ajab Gul Wazir emerged victorious according to unofficial results from all 94 polling stations. He garnered 12,525 votes, securing a significant lead over independent candidate Taj Mohammad Wazir, who secured 5,354 votes, with independent candidate Alamgir Wazir trailing in third place with 5,233 votes.
The PTI-backed Asif Khan Mehsud claimed victory based on unofficial results from 182 polling stations in Upper South Waziristan’s PK-109, garnering 11,519 votes.
Independent candidate Saeed Anwar Mehsud came in second with 7,668 votes, while Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam’s Ahmed Sher Mehsud secured the third position with 6,699 votes. The election is the first instance where independent candidates backed by PTI have secured one national and two provincial assembly seats in Waziristan region.
