The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has swept District Korangi’s National Assembly (NA) constituencies as per the results announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
The MQM-P has won all three NA seats of the district. However, the provincial assembly results of the district show a mix. As results of six of the seven Sindh Assembly seats of District Korangi were announced, two PS seats each were won by the MQM-P and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidates, and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) won one seat each.
According to the unofficial results released on the ECP’s website, MQM-P’s Aasia Ishaque Siddiqui bagged 88,260 votes and won NA-232 Korangi I. She was followed by independent candidate Adeel Ahmed, who was elected an MPA in the last general elections, polling 66,574 votes.
Supporters of the PTI had been canvassing for Ahmed, due to which he may be considered the PTI-backed candidate. However, the official list announced by the PTI showed that its candidate in the constituency was Aleem Adil Sheikh, brother of PTI leader Haleem Adil Sheikh.
Sources within the PTI said there were internal conflicts within the party and many party workers were unhappy with Aleem getting the official support of the PTI, due to which they canvassed for Ahmed who polled far greater number of votes than Aleem who could only secure 1,865 votes.
In NA-233 Korangi II, the MQM-P’s Jawed Hanif Khan secured 103,967 votes while the PTI-backed independent candidate Muhammad Haris gained 58,753 votes.
The MQM-P’s Moin Aamer Pirzada bagged 73,687 votes in NA-234 Korangi-III and PTI-backed independent candidate Faheem Khan obtained 43,774 votes.
Seven PS constituencies fall within this district. Of these, the MQM-P and PTI-backed independent candidates won two each, while the PPP and JI secured one each. The result of one constituency, PS-93, had not been released till the filing of this story.
The MQM-P’s Shariq Jamal won PS-90 after bagging 35,609 votes, while the PTI-backed Waqas Iqbal was the runner-up with 32,645 votes.
In PS-91, JI’s Muhammad Farooq emerged as the winner after polling 23,499 votes, while the PTI-backed Abid Jeelani came out second with 22,732 votes.
The PS-92 was claimed by the PTI-backed Wajid Hussain with 28,276 votes. He was followed by the JI’s Mirza Farhan Baig who secured 20,830 votes.
The MQM-P’s Najam Mirza clinched PS-94 after bagging 24,161 votes. The JI’s Arshad Hussain came second after obtaining 19,633 votes.
In PS-95, the PPP’s Farooq Awan obtained 16,386 votes and won. The PTI-backed Raja Azhar secured 11,027 votes and was the runner-up.
The PTI-backed Muhammad Awais was the winner in PS-96 after polling 16,997 votes. The JI’s Shafiq Ahmed bagged 9,664 votes.
