A number of candidates belonging to the minority communities are taking part in the February 8 elections. They include
An NA-215 contestant, Dr Mahesh Malani is a PPP candidate. He is a board member of one of the country’s famous firms. He received his early education in Sindh. During his MBBS study, he became active in politics. In the 2008 elections, he was elected MNA from Tharparkar. He has been a member of the Sindh Assembly as well. This time too, he’s contesting the election on a PPP ticket.
Contesting from PS-45 Mirpurkhas, Hari Ram is a member of Pakistan’s Hindu community.
He was born in Mirpurkhas and completed his matriculation. By profession, he is a landowner. He is quite active in politics and is a member of the PPP. He is the first-ever non-Muslim to have won the general elections for a seat in the Sindh Assembly. He is also a senior member of the PPP Central Executive Committee.
Hari Ram has so far been elected MNA for five times. From 2012 to 2018, he remained a member of the Senate. This time, he is once again contesting the poll from PS-45.
Dr Savaira Prakash hails from Buner, an underprivileged area in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. For the first time, she is contesting a general seat. She is contesting the poll from PK-25 and is being celebrated the world over. She is a member of the PPP and has served as the party’s general secretary of Women’s Wing in Buner. She is a doctor by profession.
Her father Om Prakash is also a doctor and social worker. He has been serving his area for around 35 years now and runs a medical centre called Om Prakash Medical Centre.
The PPP has nominated Chaudhry Sakhawat Masih against the PMLN’s Ahsan Iqal in NA-76 Narowal. Chaudhry Sakhawat Masih has been president of the party’s Minority Wing for 15 years. This is the first time that a member of the Christian community is contesting elections from this constituency.
The PPP has issued a ticket to Yaqoob Naeem for PP-115 Faisalabad. He is contesting
the poll against the PML-N’s Mian Tahir Jameel and the PTI’s Sheikh Shahid Javed.
