ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) said on Friday the returning officers in NA-8, Bajaur, and PK-28-IV had terminated poll-related proceedings due to the death of Rehan Zeb, a contesting candidate from these constituencies.

The returning officers issued public notice in terms of Section 73 of the Elections Act, 2017, in this connection.

“As such fresh proceedings will commence after the general election 2024 and the schedule for the said constituencies will be announced. It is clarified that it shall not be necessary for the remaining contesting candidates to file fresh nomination papers or make further deposit under Section 61 of the act,” an ECP statement says.

Likewise, due to death of Asmatullah Khan, contesting candidate from constituency PK-91, Kohat-II, the returning officer concerned terminated the poll-related proceedings by issuing public notice.

Meanwhile, as the election date of February 8 draws nearer, the Election Commission completed printing of some 260 million ballot papers on Friday, including reprinting of ballot papers for 16 constituencies on the orders of the apex court.

ECP Political Finance Director General Masood Akhtar Sherwani said delivery of ballot papers to 85 per cent of 849 constituencies of the National and provincial assemblies had also been completed.

He said: “Ballot papers and printing is a sensitive matter. We have to bring the right of voters closer to them. Ballot papers were printed from January 14 to February 2 as per schedule”. For general election 2024, he pointed out 260 million ballot papers had been printed: Green ballot papers for National Assembly and white for provincial assemblies. He said this time around, Form 45 is also being printed and sent along with ballot papers.

The number of candidates in 2024 is 54.74 per cent more than in 2018, he pointed out and explained the requirement of special paper is 194.75 per cent higher: 10pc of the paper is lost during printing. The size of ballot papers was reduced and hence the weight cut down from 2,400 tons to 2,170 tons.

He said delivery of ballot papers to Balochistan constituencies had been completed: Air deliveries were being carried out in areas with security concerns and extreme weather.
