AG Office defends KP govt in 15,500 cases, says report

Additional Advocate General remained on top of the list, who had defended the province in over 900 cases

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advocate General’s Office has represented and defended provincial government in 15,500 cases during the preceding year.

According to the annual report presented to the provincial government by Advocate General Amir Javid on Thursday, the KP AG Office had defended and disposed of 15,550 civil, criminal, legal and constitutional cases filed against the government.

The AG said that their department had shown an excelling performance and remained active after the caretaker chief minister directed for speedy disposal of cases and defended the provincial government stance in 15,500 cases of civil, criminal, legal and constitutional nature.

He said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advocate General’s Office performance was excelling during the last one year, which he attributed to the caretaker minister and his entire legal team. According to the report, the additional advocates-general, deputy advocates-general and advocates-on-record had also represented the provincial government in hundreds of cases throughout the year.

Additional Advocate General Danyal Asad Chamkani remained on top of the list, who had defended the province in over 900 cases.

The report has also established data of performance of the additional advocates-general, deputy advocates-general and advocates-on-record.

It said that the law officers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Advocate General’s Office had defended many cases at the principal seat of Peshawar High Court besides circuit benches at Abbottabad, Swat, Bannu and Dera Ismail Khan.

The report has also released a break-up of monthly cases.

The Advocate General’s Office is a constitutional office established under Article 140 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973. The Advocate-General is appointed by the governor on the advice of the chief minister. A person who is competent to be appointed as a judge of the high court is appointed as advocate general for the province.

Advocate-General is the principal law officer of the province, who holds the office during the pleasure of the governor. He is assisted by a team of law officers comprising additional advocates-general, deputy advocates-general and advocates-on-record.

The advocate general’s office represents, defends and protects the interests of the provincial government in the superior court, and provides valuable legal guidance to the provincial government in all matters which are referred to him by the government.
