KARACHI: Engro Corporation Limited announced on Wednesday that it has appointed Ahsan Zafar Syed as its new president and chief executive officer, effective from April 1, 2024.
Syed, who is currently the CEO of Engro Fertilizers Limited, a subsidiary of Engro Corporation, will succeed Ghias Khan, who will complete his term in April.
Engro Corporation said in a filing on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) that Syed will remain actively engaged in managing the affairs of Engro Fertilizers until the board of directors appoints a new CEO for the company.
Syed has over 30 years of experience in leading multi-billion-dollar projects and businesses in various sectors, including fertilizers, energy, and agri-products.
He played a key role in the construction of the world’s largest single-train urea plant, EnVen, for Engro Fertilizers, and spearheaded the operations of Pakistan’s largest rice processing facility in Muridke for Engro Eximp Agriproducts.
Syed also led Engro’s energy vertical, overseeing the development and operation of the Thar coal power and mining projects, which are part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and have helped reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels. Syed holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the NED University of Engineering and Technology and a post-graduate degree from the USA. He has also completed executive programs from INSEAD, a leading business school.
