An inspector of the Karachi Water and Swerage Corporation (KWSC) was shot dead in an apparent act of target killing on Friday.

Police said that the incident took place near Peoples Chowrangi within the limits of the Jamshed Quarters police station on the night between Thursday and Friday, where unknown motorcyclists shot and killed the victim and fled.

Following the incident, police and rescuers reached the crime scene and transported the casualty to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center where the victim was identified as 52-year-old Faheemul Hassan, son of Saeedul Hassan, a resident of Block 2, PECHS. The deceased was a father of three children and served as an inspector at the KWSC’s Tax Office in Liaquatabad.

The family claimed that Hassan had initiated a campaign against illegal constructions by the builder mafia in Liaquatabad and had also filed cases against two builders involved in illegal constructions. He had also lodged a complaint against the builders at the Liaquatabad Police Station for issuing death threats against him.

Police said the KWSC inspector was heading home from Liaquatabad when the assailants near People’s Chowrangi fired shots at him from behind, with bullets hitting him in the left arm and back.

The Jamshed Quarters police registered a case on the complaint of the deceased’s brother, Nadeem, who is a retired employee of the KWSC. “My brother was killed by unknown assailants due to unknown reasons.” He said that the inspector was also involved in property buying and selling along with his government job. The victim’s brother suspected that the incident might be a targeted killing.

Jamshed Town SP Aleena Rajper told media that the mobile phone and other belongings of the deceased were present which suggested that the incident did not occur over offering resistance to a mugging bid. She said the victim had filed a case against illegal constructions in Liaquatabad, and his brother revealed that Hassan was also receiving threats.

The victim was riding a motorcycle and when he was shot twice, SP Rajapr said and added that investigations were underway from various angles. Sindh Caretaker Chief Minister, Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar has taken notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from Karachi’s additional IGP. The CM has directed him to immediately apprehend the culprits.
