ASI arrested in custodial death case

Acting on directives from Karachi Additional IG Khadim Hussain Rind for action over the alleged custodial death at the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), Karachi, CIA DIG Ahmed Nawaz probed the incident and ordered the arrest of an assistant sub-inspector.

The spokesman for the Karachi Police Office (KPO) said in a statement on Saturday that on January 13, 2024, CIA DIG Ahmed Nawaz visited the SIU police station after receiving information about the death of one accused in the SIU and conducted a thorough investigation into the matter.

During the inquiry, it was found that on the intervening night of January 11 and 12, one accused, Nizamuddin, son of Mohammad Shafi, was brought to the SIU for interrogation in a case (74/2013) registered under Section 385, read with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, at the Orangi Town Police Station, another case (893/2023) registered under Section 325/109 at the Manghopir Police Station and a case (894/2023) registered under Section 23(I)A of the Sindh Arms Act in Manghopir.

During the investigation, the accused died at around 5am, and the investigation team left his body in a plot in his residential area in Manghopir. A case (No. 27/2024) has been registered under Section 322/365/34 at the Manghopir police station.

The spokesman for the KPO said former SIU ASI Sajid and PC Shadab had been arrested, while raids are being conducted to arrest ASI Aqeel and a private person. Recommendations are being sent for departmental action regarding negligence of other SIU officers. The CIA DIG further said that there is no place for officers and personnel involved in any kind of criminal act in the CIA Unit Police.
