Bleak future
This letter refers to the editorial ‘Disqualification verdict’ (January 9, 2024). For many, the said verdict was a foregone conclusion and not a surprise, considering the existing, fluid political situation. The CJP’s remarks during the proceedings were enough for one to predict the outcome.
While most of the focus was on Nawaz Sharif, Jehangir Tareen appears to have been a collateral beneficiary of the verdict. The Supreme Court has overturned its earlier order, which is very rare. What now stops the apex court from reversing this judgement as well, at some point down the road?
Power brokers over the years have inflicted tremendous damage to the body politic of the nation by corrupting and weakening every institution of the country. As a result, public disillusionment and despondency is at its peak with the breakdown of rule of law and a broken economy. The future is indeed bleak.
