Mayor orders expedition of waste-to-energy projects
Three projects have been started to generate energy from solid waste in Karachi. Such projects will not only make Karachi clean but also create resolve the energy issue.
Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab said this while chairing a meeting on Thursday. Sindh was the first province in Pakistan that started producing energy from waste, he remarked. He maintained that the city government wanted to ensure the development of Karachi and it had been taking steps to solve the problems of the city.
Sindh Solid Waste Management Board Managing Director Naseemuddin Mirani, Solid Waste Emergency and Efficiency Project (SWEEP) Director Zubair Ahmed Channa and officials of energy companies attended the meeting along with Spokesperson for Mayor on Political Affairs Karamullah Waqasi and Pakistan Peoples Party leader Dil Muhammad.
The mayor told the officials of energy companies participating in the waste-to-energy projects to complete the feasibility study and start generating energy from waste as soon as possible. He said the public had high expectations from the government and the timeline suggested by the companies in their briefing was not satisfactory.
Wahab asked the companies to revise the timeline for the completion of the projects and give another briefing within a week to tell him how long the projects would be completed in phases.
The Green Waste Energy would produce synthetic gas from waste, while Khan Renewable Company would generate 45 megawatts of electricity from waste. The Engro Energy is working on a project to produce refuse derived fuel.
The companies have been allotted space at the Jam Chakro and Gondpas landfill sites for the projects.
