LAHORE : The Government College University (GCU) Lahore Monday celebrated its 160th Founders’ Day.
The day marked a significant milestone in its educational journey that started on January 1, 1864 in the Haveli of Raja Dhyan Singh in the Walled City Lahore as the liberal arts and science college.
The institution has grown over the years, now accommodating over 15,000 students, a substantial increase from its beginning with only 9 students.
A special event for the 160th Founders' Day was organised at the University’s Abdus Salam Hall, featuring the participation of Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Adnan and former Vice Chancellor Prof Hasan Amir Shah. Former Dean Prof Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt also addressed the event, highlighting the institution's rich history and emphasising the importance of preserving its traditions.
The event was attended by a large number of Old Ravians, showcasing the enduring connection and loyalty of the alumni to their alma mater.
On the occasion, Prof Khalid Butt stressed the significance of not experimenting with institutions like Government College, emphasising that such establishments were rooted in tradition.
Addressing the challenges faced by the institution, the VC acknowledged the difficulties but assured that all possible steps were underway for improvement. He announced reduction in hostel charges and fees.
Prof Adnan also claimed the new admission policy resulted in nothing but reducing admissions. He emphasised the need to improve the quality of education while also addressing financial concerns. Despite the challenges, the VC expressed determination in steering the institution towards excellence.
