This refers to the letter ‘Made in Pakistan’ (Dec 22) by Syed Ovais Akhtar. There is nothing to rejoice about, unfortunately. The writer is probably mistaken. The hybrid electric vehicle has likely not been produced in Pakistan, it has, I think, only been assembled. After all, this is the case for many if not most of our fuel-powered vehicles, let alone the electric ones.
This model leads to huge outflow of forex due to the import of car parts. One wishes that some patriotic Pakistani entrepreneur would set up a complete manufacturing facility to produce Pakistan’s own branded vehicle. But the unfriendly business environment - red tape, corruption and inconsistent policies – acts as a road block for an industrialist to put his money and faith in his own land.
