News reports highlighting the potential dangers and the mishaps associated with gas cylinders have been around for decades. However, no effective steps have been taken to ensure their quality, putting human lives at risk. Just this past Monday (December 18) an estimated three people were reported killed and over a dozen injured after a building collapsed in Karachi’s Machar Colony area due to a gas-cylinder blast.
Despite incidents like this taking place nearly every year, the ground reality remains unchanged and substandard gas cylinders are freely used across the country. Crucial questions arise: Are all gas-cylinder vendors licensed? Can the gas cylinders sold at different locations guarantee the same standard? In the aftermath of the recent tragedy, these questions demand answers from the relevant authorities.
