ISAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has decided to escalate the power tariff by Rs1.15 per unit. This decision, imposing an additional financial burden of Rs22.29 billion on the populace, raises concerns about the economic strain on consumers.
Effective from January 1, 2024, to March 3, 2024, this tariff hike is set to affect all consumers, including K-Electric. The Nepra attributes this increase to the quarterly adjustment category, signaling a potential escalation in the overall cost of living for citizens across the country, reported local media on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Nepra has completed hearing on plea of federal government to raise electricity tariff for the consumers of Karachi by Rs1.75 per unit under the head of last two quarterly adjustments. This additional tariff has to be transferred on the consumers of Karachi in coming days under the policy of uniform tariff across the country.
According to the Nepra decision, Rs1.15 will be collected in the months of January, February and March from the consumers of ten electricity distribution companies including Karachi under the head of first quarterly adjustment of the current year. The consumers of these ten power distribution companies will have to bear the burden of over Rs26 billion.
