LAHORE: Justice Shehram Sarwar Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court Monday ordered the release of Pakistan Tehreek Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Sher Afzal Marwat.
The decision followed a petition filed by Marwat’s brother, Khalid Lateef Khan, challenging his detention.Advocate Khawaja Mohsin Abbas, representing the caretaker Punjab government, submitted a reply during the proceedings.
The reply said that the Lahore deputy commissioner had issued a notification for Sher Afzal Marwat’s detention, and the petitioner should have initially approached the relevant forum against it. The reply also requested the dismissal of the petition. However, the petitioner’s lawyer argued against the plea, contending that the detention was illegal and unconstitutional.
After considering detailed arguments from both parties, the court ordered the release of Sher Afzal Marwat, requiring him to submit surety bonds before the deputy commissioner.
Sher Afzal Marwat was arrested on December 14 by the police from GPO Chowk after attending a bar event at the LHC. The deputy commissioner had detained Marwat for 30 days under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance.
