The passing-out ceremony of assistant collectors of customs from 50th Specialized Training Program was held at Customs Academy of Pakistan (CAP) on Tuesday.
Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairman Malik Amjed Zubair Tiwana presided over the ceremony as the chief guest, while FBR’s member customs operations Zeba Hai Azhar, CAP director general Saima Shahzad and director Nawabzadi Aliya Khanji also attended the event.
In her welcome address, Shahzad congratulated the graduating officers and their families upon successfully completing the training. She highlighted some key features of the training and its importance in the professional careers of new officers. Speaking of the challenges and diversified role of customs, she advised young officers to build their careers on pragmatic lines, while staying motivated to serve the country.
The CAP DG also acknowledged the role and cooperation of the Secretariat Training Institute, World Wild Fund for Nature, Strategic Export Control Division, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, US Bureau International Narcotics Law Enforcement, US Department of Homeland Security Investigations, US Customs Border Protection in the training.
She informed the audience that besides laws, rules and regulations pertaining to customs, excise, income and sales taxes, the officers were also trained in the areas of anti-money laundering, countering financing for terrorism, human health and security, cross border movement of strategic goods and illegal trade in endangered species among other subjects.
Azhar remarked that the CAP was a dynamic institution that was playing a key role in imparting training in overall capacity building of the customs department. She appreciated the contribution of the CAP DG and her team. She urged the passing-out officers to learn about maintaining balance between facilitation and enforcement, while making things easy and quick for the taxpayers.
In his concluding remarks, Tiwana conveyed his best wishes to the new officers on starting their professional careers. He lauded the role of CAP in making the officers comprehend how to maintain harmony and balance in individual and collective capacity for better.
The FBR chairman asked the new officers to remember their role as public servants and ensure their accessibility to their staffers and the public. He urged the officers to protect the institution’s core values, improve their professional competence and serve the department with utmost dedication.
He also administered performance pledge to the passing-out officers, which was followed by distribution of certificates.
The officers referred the training as a milestone, hoping that it would help them build their professional careers on solid footings.
