KMC City Council committees to be increased to 37 on JI’s advice: mayor

On the advice of the Jamaat-e-Islami, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) City Council will increase the number of council committees to 37 from 28, said Mayor Murtaza Wahab in a press conference held at the lawn of the KMC head office on Wednesday.

He said he wants to take everyone along in the wider interest of Karachi. A unanimously approved resolution of the City Council, he said, would have more priority to solve the longstanding important problems facing the city.

Wahab said that they are working on establishing a tradition of communication and consultation with all parliamentary parties before the meeting. 

With the advice of the Jamaat-e-Islami, he said, it has been decided to increase the number of City Council committees to 37. He said that they would work together with the political parties that support them to solve the basic problems of Karachi. The City Council, he said, needs to play its role. “I am hopeful that tomorrow the meeting of the City Council will be held in a pleasant atmosphere,” he said.

On this occasion, Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, Peoples Party Parliamentary Leader Najmi Alam, chief whip Karamullah Waqasi, Juman Darwan and other officials were also present.

Wahab said that the main task of the City Council is to make a policy that benefits the people of Karachi, and everyone has the right to express their point of view but with respect; only protests do not solve issues. “I am grateful to the opposition parties that they feel our seriousness regarding the solution of urban problems, so the deputy mayor Karachi talked to the representatives of the Jamaat-e-Islami, in which they also showed seriousness,” he said,

While explaining the details of the agenda of the upcoming meeting of the City Council, he said that water, sewage, gas, and electricity are the main problems of the city on which all political parties agree. “We will discuss the non-supply of gas in the cold weather in tomorrow’s meeting and a resolution will be passed in this regard, besides speeding up the construction work of Red Line on University Road and Green Line on MA Jinnah Road. It will also be demanded that the federal government should accelerate the pace of work on these projects,” he said.

He said that KMC now has the authority to appoint its property inspector in every town of Karachi. To show solidarity with Palestinians, he said, they are going to attribute the Gulistan-e-Johar underpass to them. After tomorrow’s meeting, he said, the next meeting would be called soon. “We are working on the things that come in our scope,” he said and suggested: “Let’s all work for the city, disagree but sit together to solve the problems.”
