This refers to the letter 'Sheriffs of Nottingham' (November 23, 2023) by M Shaikh. The writer has taken exception to the government's decision to disable gas connections, power, and other basic necessities to bring the non-filers into the tax net as doing so, in the writer’s mind, would be a violation of human rights.
A question arises: Are all these persons who are avoiding taxes not contributing towards the miseries of the poor? The government should however come up with an alternate workable measures to force the tax evaders to pay their taxes rather than disabling basic facilities.
