Old habits die hard

The PML-N is repeating the same old tactics which have contributed to the destabilization of the democratic fabric in the country. The bringing of the same old ‘electables’, back into the party after they deserted it during the 2018 elections is a serious blunder. It was Nawaz Sharif who vowed that he would not accept those party members who left him in the lurch in 2018 again. But today these very same people are not only being invited to rejoin the party but are also apparently being offered key positions.

Old habits die hard

Is this healthy politics and can it strengthen the democratic system? Did Nawaz Sharif struggle for the past five years to develop this kind of political culture? If this is the standard set by him for future politics, he had better stay at home and call it quits.

I find the coverage of Nawaz Sharif’s political return and the approach he has adopted since to be rather surprising. Apparently, he is being accused of becoming the new ‘ladla’ in our politics. However, if we look at the former PMs political past, we will find that he has never been beyond securing a deal with the powers that be when expediency requires it.

The prodigal son’s return could not have been amidst more fanfare than an ambassador-level send-off at the airport and biometrics being taken on arrival without any condition to attend court. The truth is, Nawaz Sharif was, is and always will be the blue-eyed boy of the system despite the occasional bout of suffering from ‘principled politics’.
