ISLAMABAD: Japan has announced the organisation of a Japanese film festival and a Karate session in Pakistan. Additionally, it will be conducting scholarship programmes.

Speaking to the media on Thursday evening at his residence in the Diplomatic Enclave, Japanese Ambassador WADA Mitsuhiro hoped that the youth of both countries would develop an interest in each other’s culture and people, further strengthening bilateral relations leading up to the 80th, 90th, and 100th anniversaries of our relationship.

The ambassador highlighted that over 80 Japanese companies are currently operating in Pakistan, creating more than 80,000 jobs. These companies have shared knowledge, technologies, and experiences, and local partners have supported Japanese businesspeople throughout the business cycle as old friends.

He recalled his visit to Sialkot in September with Japanese companies to explore further strengthening business ties.

The ambassador expressed happiness that Japan’s artificial leather, stainless steel, and other materials contribute to the production of high-quality soccer balls, surgical instruments, and sports apparel for export worldwide.

Despite facing economic challenges in Pakistan, he assured that efforts would be made to ensure the businesses of the two countries don’t suffer setbacks.

JICA’s Chief Representative Yasumitsu Kinoshita and Chief of the Public Affairs Section Takane were also present.

The ambassador mentioned that the two countries had celebrated the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations last year and continued to develop the relationship this year. He recalled Japan’s support during Pakistan’s largest flood and the subsequent assistance pledge of approximately $77 million in January.

Ambassador WADA Mitsuhiro informed the media about Japan’s new Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, and the existing high-level consultation frameworks between Pakistan and Japan, including Foreign Secretary-level political dialogue. He emphasised the commitment to further developing the long-standing friendship through various channels.

He announced that Japan has conferred Imperial Decorations on Imtiaz Ahmad, former Pakistan’s Ambassador, for his contributions to strengthening friendship, cultural and economic relations, and mutual understanding.

Dr. Gazala Irfan, President of the Pakistan-Japan Cultural Association, Lahore, was also honoured for her longstanding contributions to the promotion of cultural relationships.
