A video featuring an Afghan refugee boy sweeping in the Sohrab Goth SP’s office went viral on social media, prompting an investigation by the Sindh Police.
Officials said the video surfaced on various social media platforms on Friday morning, depicting a young boy engaged in sweeping near the Afghan refugee camp. Allegations arose that the boy was instructed to sweep by the police present at the camp.
In response, police high-ups took action, ordering an immediate inquiry. The District East SSP and other officials probed the matter, speaking to the child and the chairman of the Afghan refugee camp.
It was determined that individuals from Illyas Goth had been relocated to the camp for document verification. Interviews were conducted with those present, including the child. On Friday night, a statement from the Sindh Police addressed the case, stating, "In the case of the migrant child sweeping in SP Sohrab Goth's office, the official video statement of the child, identified as Hassan, is available. Hassan explained, 'I was there with my parents for document verification.
A woman told me to sweep the courtyard and offered Rs100. She made a video while he was sweeping. After completing the task, I wasn't paid the promised Rs100.'" Khan Mohammad, uncle of Hassan, confirmed the incident, asserting that he was present with his nephews, and the woman instructed his nephew to sweep.
Hassan’s uncle said the promised payment of Rs100 was not made. Haji Abdullah, chairman of the Afghan refugee camp, praised the positive attitude of the police. He claimed the woman involved had asked the child to sweep for Rs100 but failed to make the payment.
