Prevention of diseases discussed

A team of Pakistan Kidney, Liver Institute and Research Centre (PKLI&RC) and the officials of the Punjab government held a meeting on Friday to discuss the strategies for prevention of the diseases like hepatitis B and C.

Adviser to Chief Minister on Health Kh Salman Rafique and  PKLI President Dr Saeed Akhter chaired the meeting.According to a handout, as the PKLI plans to dedicate a considerable amount of funding and efforts towards the prevention side, the purpose of the meeting was to discuss the strategies for prevention and awareness of such diseases as hepatitis B and C.

Health DG Dr Mukhtar Hussain Syed said the major sources of diseases were reuse of disposable syringes and the barber shops. He said the hospital waste management, Environmental Protection Act, planning for a rigorous preventive strategy were some of the major initiatives that the government of Punjab was taking to reduce the spread of the diseases.  Khawaja Salman Rafique said a coordinated effort at the local level was required to work on prevention.

Ms Ammara from PKLI, while sharing a presentation on the rise and spread of hepatitis B and C, said the factors like reuse of syringes, overuse of injections per person per year, shave from roadside barbers, no proper disposal system, infections through dental treatment were some of the major reasons leading to the spread of the diseases in Pakistan.

Workshop: The five-day training workshop on “Reproductive Ultrasonography in Domestic Animals” concluded at  University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) here on Friday.

Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Talat Naseer Pasha chaired the concluding session of the workshop and gave away certificates to the participants. He said such training programmes were necessary for knowledge-sharing, skills development and bringing competency in professionals' work.

The workshop was aimed at equipping the participants with required knowledge and skills to diagnose reproductive issues and to improve farm fertility through ultrasonography. The course also aimed to enhance participants' practical knowledge and skills about the use and application of ultrasound in reproductive management of modern dairy.

BIRD SHOW:   University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Department of Clinical Medicine & Surgery in collaboration with Asian Budgerigar Society is organising a one-day fancy bird show at City Campus on April 17.
