PESHAWAR: At least four alleged robbers were killed and 14 others wounded in clashes with police in recent weeks. The Peshawar Police have adopted an aggressive policy against snatchers after an unprecedented increase in street crimes and terror attacks.

After increasing patrolling and going after the snatchers in different rural and urban areas, police have clashed with street criminals many times in the last three weeks. “The police and snatchers have clashed 26 times in the last few weeks. During these clashes, four alleged snatchers were killed and 26 people wounded,” an official told The News. He added that the wounded criminals were held and charged in connection with different cases.

The official said the law and order had improved in the provincial capital after the aggressive policing. The cops were recently directed to adopt aggressive policing against the street criminals, keep a check on all those released from jail and compile data of the criminals as well as ice sellers and addicts.

There were complaints that gangs of street criminals were openly challenging the writ of the state in almost all parts of Peshawar. On the other hand, the police officers and juniors were said to be discouraging registration of the large number of cases happening daily. After complaints, the SSP operations circulated a phone number to facilitate the people to send complaints if the police refused to lodge a case or misbehaved with them.
