Islamabad: In a groundbreaking move, the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association (POA) has fervently called for the establishment of state-of-the-art orthopaedic and trauma centers in every district of the country. With trauma emerging as the second leading cause of mortality after hepatitis B and C, the POA stresses the critical need for specialized facilities to address the surge in accidents, bomb blasts, earthquakes, and other disasters.

The POA extends unconditional support to the Government of Pakistan, urging immediate action to ensure the establishment of trauma centers in every district. Recognizing the pivotal role of the "golden hour" in saving lives, the association proposes the urgent consideration of trauma centers on motorways and highways, supported by helicopter services. Highlighting their commitment to addressing the increased demand for modern trauma and orthopaedic care, the POA informs about its continuous efforts in training fellows and undergraduate students through workshops and fellowship programs. Notably, the association has granted a 52-bed fellowship to orthopaedic consultants, covering sports surgery, spine surgery, joint replacement surgeries, and trauma, with financial support of one lac per month to each fellow.

Looking towards the future, the POA plans to establish modern skill labs in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, seeking assistance from philanthropists and the Government of Pakistan. Emphasizing its dedication to advancing the field, the association acknowledges its role in conducting the first-ever online elections for the executive board, with the results announced at the Orthocon in Karachi. Dr. Muhammad Shoaib Khan has been elected as the new president, succeeding Professor Dr. Tehseen Riaz. Dr. Lal Khan Kakar assumes the role of General Secretary, and Dr. Masood Umer is elected as the President-elect, set to take charge in 2024.

In a remarkable gesture of global solidarity, the POA expresses its commitment to sending orthopaedic surgeons to countries facing disasters, such as Palestine, Afghanistan, and Syria, offering their expertise and assistance. The association also extends gratitude to the pharmaceutical industry for its support in organizing workshops and fellowships. This visionary initiative by
