Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Friday paid a visit to the under-construction Bakhtiari Youth Centre on Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan in North Nazimabad where he inspected the construction work.
The youth centre was being constructed for Rs600 million, he said.
Speaking to the media, he said the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) politics was not based on criticism and prejudice. He asked his political opponents to stop fighting and work together, as it was the responsibility of all the parties to serve the city.
The mayor claimed that more work was being carried out in District Central now than in the past. He said the youth of Karachi were being provided with better sports opportunities and a world-class cricket ground and football stadium would be constructed at the Bakhtiari Youth Centre on 15 acres of land for Rs600 million.
Similar development projects were being completed in all the districts of Karachi, he added. District Central PPP President Masroor Ahsan, General Secretary Dil Muhammad and other local leaders were also present on the occasion.
Wahab said that along with the construction of pavilions and dressing rooms for the players in the two stadiums at the center, digital scoreboards, digital screens and flood lights would also be installed. “We will complete this project ahead of time, which will provide the best sports facilities to the youth of District Central,” he stated, adding that the district had produced cricket superstar cricketers in the past.
With the availability of modern facilities, the youth of Karachi would be ready to glorify the name of their country at the international level, he said.
He said that when Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Mustafa Kamal was the mayor, he had all the powers, but even during that regime, not so much development work was witnessed in District Central.
He remarked that some people gave the credit of significant development work that took place in District Central in the past to Kamal and others gave the credit to the Jamaat-e-Islami’s Niamatullah Khan, and there were also some who believed then president Pervez Musharraf should be given the credit of that development. He added that now all the development work was being carried out by the PPP.
He said that an underpass was being constructed in front of the Meena Bazaar. Iqbal Park would be inaugurated in Federal B area on November 15, he added.
He also announced that new buses would come to the city and tenders had been issued to start work on the Yellow Line Bus Rapid Transit project.
The mayor said PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was himself interested in Karachi’s development and today he had gone to the Safari Park.
Wahab said that if the PPP came into power, it would start projects to generate cheap electricity and initiate welfare programmes similar to the Benazir Income Support Program.
