ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Core Committee Friday strongly condemned the increase in ‘retaliatory tactics’ against the party ahead of the elections and the ‘serious deterioration’ in the level-playing field for political parties in the run up to electoral process.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and the caretaker government, the core committee alleged in a meeting, have failed to perform their constitutional duties and are key facilitators in the state’s agenda of deviating from the Constitution.

“The Election Commission and the caretaker government should realise their most sensitive duties and instead of being part of conspiracies against democracy, they should perform the duty of its survival and protection,” it emphasised.

The Constitution, it contended, mandates the ECP to conduct free, fair, fair and transparent elections, whereas after the date of the elections, the criminal chain of state revenge against the PTI has intensified.

Despite the announcement of the election date, it regretted, the state institutions continue to ‘kidnap for statements’ of PTI leaders. And, the inaction of the ECP and caretaker government on the forced disappearance of Central Additional Secretary Ali Nawaz Awan is the worst example of lawlessness.

“All those held, including Ali Nawaz Awan, should be recovered and the detainees should be released immediately.” The PTI committee reiterated the demand of party Chairman Imran Khan for trial in open court in presence of national and foreign media, as it noted, there is no constitutional or legal justification to conduct his trial in secret or in jail.

“We will not accept any attempt to keep the trial secret in any way or run it contrary to the requirements of transparency. Instead of conducting the trial in an open place in the jail, the cipher trial should be transferred to a regular court and the trial process should be completed in a transparent manner in the presence of domestic and foreign media,” the forum demanded.
