This letter refers to the editorial ‘What’s in a manifesto? (November 10, 2023). This is the fundamental problem of our political parties. They have no political vision to serve the people. They just want power, protocol, security, increased nuisance value, respect from all quarters and a pedestal which ensures that they are above the law and are ‘different’ than ordinary citizens. The ‘elite’ wants to stay elite via the vote of the same people they will forget until the next elections.
The one essential ingredient which has been missing from our political landscape is political awareness amongst the people. Some people argue that this awareness will only come with education and literacy in which, unfortunately, we are lacking. One disagrees with this view as you do not need education to understand the basic rules of governance.
