This refers to the letter 'Economic development' (November 7, 2023) by Engr Asim Nawab. The writer has rightly suggested that salaries in state-owned enterprises should be linked to the performance of these organizations. All the administrative reform commissions formed since Independence recommended merit as the sole criterion for pay determination. In developed countries, the salary of each position follows job analysis and job evaluation.
Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the salary of a position is decided on the basis of the nuisance value of the position and the personal relations of the position holder with policymakers.
