Karachi Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) Emir Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has expressed grave concerns over the police failure in Karachi saying that violent crimes claimed 110 lives in the megacity during the outgoing year.
In response to the statistics on skyrocketing street crime in Karachi, he said on Thursday that the criminal elements roamed around free in Karachi due to mismanagement, corruption and black sheep in the police.
As many as 817 motorcycles were reported as snatched and 4,396 others stolen in the city in the month of October alone, he said. The JI leader lamented that thousands of mobile phones had also been snatched as a matter of routine and now people even did not report mobile phone snatchings as they had no hopes with the law enforcers.
He said Karachi was a megacity and the economic jugular vein of the country. It contributed heavily to the budget but at the same time it was the most neglected city in the country, he added.
Rehman demanded that the caretaker government and the newly appointed inspector general of the police take notice of the situation and take concrete measures to resolve the issues. He held the black sheep and corrupt elements in the police responsible for the situation. He stressed the need to purge the police from corrupt elements and recruit locals in the police.
