ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan will hear appeals of the late President General (retd) Pervez Musharraf against his death sentence in a treason case on November 10.
A four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa and comprising Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah, Justice Aminuddin Khan and Justice Athar Minallah, will hear the case.
A special court had found Pervez Musharraf guilty of high treason under Article 6 for suspending the Constitution by imposing an emergency in the country on November 3, 2007.
A three-member high treason special court, headed by Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth and comprising Justice Nazar Akbar and Justice Shahid Karim, sentenced Pervez Musharraf by a two-one margin on December 17, 2019. Musharraf at that time was in self-exile in Dubai. The creation of the special court for high treason was challenged in the Lahore High Court, where Justice Amir Hussain and Justice Syed Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi declared the constitution of the special court unconstitutional.
Tawfiq Asif Advocate, Vice Chairman of Pakistan Bar Council Abid Saqi, Sindh High Court Bar Association and Hafiz Abdul Rahman Ansari had filed separate appeals in the Supreme Court. Musharraf’s lawyer Salman Safdar had filed an appeal against the death sentence, but the appeals were put in cold storage by former chief justices.
