The Punjab government announced the establishment of the Punjab Highway Patrol in 2003 to provide security to people travelling via highways. Patrolling posts were set up throughout the province, and their main objective was to control crime on highways, apprehend criminals and hand them over to the local police, provide first aid to the injured, and serve as reporting centres. To some extent these objectives were fulfilled but a few things should be kept in mind by both the police and people.
First, the staff should not be changed for at least one year so that they are able to identify local residents. The constant changing of staff members is really troublesome for the locals as they are constantly questioned by the police whenever they go out of their homes. Second, people should also realize and understand that the patrolling police are working for their safety; they must cooperate with them and act as responsible citizens.
