Our country houses a large number of ancient sites and historical monuments. From the necropolis of Makli near Thatta to the Buddhist heritage in Swat, these historical assets are our link with the past. As the government is totally aloof to maintaining and preserving these sites, a number of historical monuments have reached an advanced stage of degradation. The property is threatened by the significant decay caused by local climate conditions. In addition, encroachments and vandalism threaten these sites, and damage and loss by pilferage have assumed alarming proportions.
The government can earn money by promoting tourism. We should also play our part by not damaging these sites. There is a need to enact laws to preserve and safeguard these sites.
