Rich heritage

July 31, 2023

Pakistan’s past is a synthesis of ancient civilizations and its vast antiquity is a reminder of the cultures once rooted here. Appallingly, these relics often take center stage for all the wrong reasons. Gurdwara Rori Sahib in Jahman, Punjab, reportedly built during the era of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and visited thrice by Baba Nanak, collapsed around two weeks ago due to the heavy rains in the area. The fact that such losses strip us of our history is beyond the pale. Buddhist and Sikh monuments and relics punctuate Punjab, Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as both faiths were central here. They comprise some of the most cherished heritage sites in the world.

For this reason, we can create a religious and cultural tourism industry that promises billions of dollars. But a rickety regulatory and official framework in the tourism sector stunts all potential. Heritage experts and guides, restoration projects, transport, visas, and guesthouses and initiatives such as the Kartarpur Corridor, can resuscitate the travel economy, soften Pakistan’s image and reawaken our pluralism.
