KARACHI: Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif on Monday assured former president and Co-chairman Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Asif Ali Zardari that the government would address his party’s reservations on the appointment of Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Chaudhry Birjees Tahir as the Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan.
The appointment, made by President Mamnoon Hussain, has been seen as a move to rig the Gilgit-Baltistan elections.A delegation of PPP Gilgit-Baltistan, led by former chief minister Syed Mehdi Shah, had met Zardari a few days back in which he was briefed on the federal government’s alleged plan to rig the GB elections.
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf has also alleged that the federal government has already started pre-poll rigging in the GB elections, which are due to be held this year.During the one-on-one meeting, the two leaders also discussed the elimination of terrorism and the security situation of Karachi in detail.
Meanwhile, several annoyed leaders of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) also met the prime minister. The leaders, including Irfanullah Marwat and the Sherazi brothers, complained of political discrimination they were allegedly facing at the hands of the Sindh PPP.
