Musharraf first

By our correspondents
March 25, 2016

This refers to the article, ‘Musharraf first’ (March 21) by Syed Talat Hussain. While criticising the government for letting Gen Pervez Musharraf go abroad, the writer has missed some important facts about the cases against Musharraf. The October 12, 1999 coup was given legal cover by the Supreme Court. The Bugti murder case is just politicking. And regarding Benazir Bhutto, it is on record that she was advised by Musharraf not to come back before elections because there were threats to her life but she ignored it.

Coming to Article 6, its contents have been reworded to try Musharraf after the passage of the 18h Amendment and it cannot be applied with retrospective effect and that too, in isolation. There are always two sides of the story and to know the truth only real facts based on ground realities should be considered. It is not fair to undermine the authority of the prime minister and the role of an independent judiciary at a time when the government is busy in the National Action Plan.
