Four killed, eight hurt in Kentucky bank shooting

LOUISVILLE: Four people were killed and at least eight others injured Monday in a shooting targeting a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, according to US police who said the suspect -- believed to be an ex-employee -- died in the assault.

Police said they received an early morning alert to an “active aggressor” at the Old National Bank in Louisville, the largest city in the southern state, with officers arriving on the scene within “minutes.”

They “encountered the suspect almost immediately, still firing gunshots,” Louisville police deputy chief Paul Humphrey told a press conference, adding that the shooter had died at the scene.

“We´re trying to confirm if that suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound or was killed by officers,” Humphrey said. At least four other people were killed in the bank and eight -- including two police officers -- were being treated for injuries at the University of Louisville hospital, Humphrey added.

Two people were in critical condition, including one of the officers. “It is clear from the officers´ response that they absolutely saved people´s lives,” said Humphrey.

Police were working to identify the victims of the latest mass shooting to rock the country, where more than 4,900 people have died from firearm-related violence already in 2023, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

President Joe Biden -- who is pushing for lawmakers in Washington to break a years-long deadlock and take action against gun violence -- voiced frustration after the latest “senseless” killings.

“Too many Americans are paying for the price of inaction with their lives,” Biden wrote on Twitter, adding: “When will Republicans in Congress act to protect our communities?” Several of those killed and injured were known to Kentucky´s Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, who said he once ran a campaign out of the building where the shooting took place.

“I have a very close friend that didn´t make it today and I have another close friend who didn´t either, and one who´s at the hospital but I hope is going to make it through,” he told a press conference, choking back tears.

Authorities were working to establish the shooter´s link to the bank. “We believe this is a lone gunman involved in this, that did have a connection to the bank,” Humphrey said, adding that “it appears he was a previous employee.”

Humphrey urged residents to stay clear of the scene during what was expected to be a long investigation, likely to go “into the night.”
