CM seeks report from Multan CPO on attack of journalist

MULTAN: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday took a notice of an attack on a journalist by 14 people.

The CM ordered City Police Officer Azhar Ikram to take stern action against the accused and submit a report to him.

The CPO constituted a committee headed by the Cantt SP to probe and arrest the culprits.

Talking to The News, Rana Shahid, who worked for a TV channel, said that 14 accused with daggers abducted his brother Rana Awais, a journalist, from Shah Rukn-e-Alam and attempted to chop off his legs on Wednesday night. The kidnappers, however, cut his veins after failing to chop off his legs and threw him near his house. The injured journalist was shifted to the Nishtar Hospital. Rana Shahid said that 10-12 persons belonging to the attackers also reached the hospital emergency and threatened the doctors not to treat his brother Rana Owais.

Rana Shahid said that they had nominated four accused Nasim, Azam, Babar Ghouri and Sikandar in the case.

On Thursday, the journalists staged a demonstration against the incident in front of the press club. They expressed solidarity with Rana Awais and demanded immediate arrest of the accused.

Meanwhile, former PM Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani, in a press conference, condemned the incident. PPP south Punjab president Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood, general secretary Shaukat Basra, south Punjab People’s Lawyers Forum president Habibullah Shakir, PPP information secretary Khawaja Rizwan Alam, former MNA Nafis Ansari and others also condemned the attack on the journalist.
