Overloaded trucks with steel bars hanging around 15 feet more than the length of the vehicle can be seen on the roads of Lahore. Such trucks are frequently fined by the traffic police and then allowed to proceed further with the same cargo. This poses a serious danger to other vehicles on roads, particularly motorcyclists after sunset. When I recently asked a traffic police officer, who allowed a truck with such steel bars, to proceed further on Badian Road, he surprised me by saying that the relevant traffic rules do not allow him to impound such a vehicle other than just imposing a fine and letting the vehicle continue on its journey.
This application of traffic rules does not seem logical because it poses serious danger to other vehicles on the roads. The Punjab traffic police is requested to clarify the rules.
