Two terrorists attacked Sharifabad Police Station in District Central with a locally made bomb on Monday, causing damage to its building and several vehicles.

However, no casualties occurred in the blast that happened when the attackers riding a motorcycle lobbed a hand grenade into the police station. A guard rushed outside but the attackers escaped from the scene, said DIG Feroze Shah of West Range.

Police and Bomb Disposal Squad officials immediately arrived at the police station and started an investigation.

Talking to The News, DIG Shah said there was no CCTV camera within and outside the police station. He said he had sought a report from the senior superintendent of police (SSP) of District Central, telling him to explain why no CCTV camera had been installed there. The SSP was also directed to submit a detailed report on the incident.

In their report, the Bomb Disposal Squad officials said it was a locally made bomb that contained explosive material but did not have any ball bearings or nails.

Police stations are increasingly coming under attacks from terrorists in Karachi, where a Rangers-led targeted operation, which was launched in September 2013, has brought down criminal activities, including acts of terrorism, significantly.

In a similar attack on February 12, motorcyclists threw a bomb into Mobina Town Police Station on Abul Hassan Isphani Road, injuring a cop on security duty and damaging a mobile van.
