Experimenting with all things fashion and beauty can be fun and a great way to spike your creative juices. And what better time than the final months to look back at this year’s greatest hits? The mega-popular social media app has pros and novice alike swatching, sharing and creating makeup magic that may sound absurd but actually works. And since this year we were kind of at home for the better part of the year but also starting to step out into the world, the interwebs had a lot of creative and convenient hacks that didn’t involve a lot of splurging as well. So, since we’re already champing where makeup trends are concerned, we couldn’t wait to rundown through 2021’s beauty lens. DIY your own tinted moisturiser

When you want something lighter to apply and you don’t have a CC cream or a tinted moisturiser at hand, you can just make your own. The best part about DIY is that you customise it according to the weather and the kind of coverage you like.

So grab your foundation and turn it into a tinted moisturiser. Use equal parts foundation and moisturiser — apply a penny size amount of each and mix in your palm. For a glowy and dewy effect you can add a few drops of liquid highlighter, or if you are looking for a tanned glow, add a tiny bit of gel bronzer.

When the weather gets a little dry, you can add a little more moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated.

Backward makeup

This one sounds too wacky to work, but devotees of the ‘Foundation in Reverse’ TikTok trend prove it does. You basically take your regular makeup routine and do most of it backward. Begin with moisturiser as you normally do. But instead of reaching for the foundation for the next step, dust on the powder that you would usually finish with. Follow that with a few spritzes of a setting spray. Next, apply some primer over that. For the last step, blend in the foundation. Backward, yes, but with beautiful results.

Ditch the concealer triangles

Remember when we were all trying to cover up our dark circles making inverted triangles out of concealers. Sometimes it worked (depending on the products) and sometimes it just turned out cakey and not flattering at all. Well, turns out we were doing our concealers wrong this whole time. The trick is to apply a little bit on the inner corner and the outer corner. Then blend it out. Not only it’s going to cancel out the darkness but it will give you an eye-lift, which will make you look more awake and fresh.

Mapping your brows

Eyebrows can be finicky and not everyone can get it right… until now. This hack that has been making rounds is a great way to get natural good looking brows. First, you brush the hair in your brows up. Then, holding the brow pencil vertically, you use the outer corner of your nose to mark the inner bottom corner of your eyebrow on each side — this marks the start of your brows. Next, you line the pencil up at an angle extending from the corner of your nose to the end of your brow and mark the placement.

Lastly, to find the arches, you hold the pencil at an angle from the outer corner of your nose and along the outside of the iris of your eye. The location the tip of the pencil hits is where your arch should be. Now start filling in your brows and brush the hair up into place with some brow gel. But if you’re out, try this DIY method to keep even the most unruly brows in place. Apply a small amount of hair gel or hairspray on to a clean spoolie or toothbrush and brush your brows into place.

Bobby pin for the perfect wing

Nailing the wing is one thing. Nailing the wing perfectly on both eyes is another. The very idea of getting the winged eyeliner right can send some into panic; it’s one of the hardest beauty techniques to perfect. But a simple bobby pin can make your life so much easier. It is a pretty simple hack. Just paint the ends of a bobby pin with eyeliner and press it against your skin at the end of your lash line with the little knobs of the flared bobby pin on either side of the corner of your eye. Pull back the pin and you’ve got the start of a perfectly positioned wing. Use it as a guide to paint on the rest. Voila! Your eyeliner game is on point.

Colourful lashes

If you thought the monochromatic makeup movement would remain limited to matching lids, cheeks, and lips forever, think again. A new trend started making rounds this year. The hack uses concealer and loose pigment to tint falsies in fantastical hues to match or complement winged eyeliner or eye shadow looks has taken hold. It might sound wild, but it actually looks so cool. After rainbow liners, rainbow lashes were a big thing this year.

Glossy lipstick that will last for long

Imagine going to dinner wearing a bright red glossy lip and not getting any kinds of lip marks on the cutlery or the glasses. And after a scrumptious dinner, your lipstick looks as impeccable as when you applied it. Sounds unbelievable? Well, you better believe it because this hack is fool-proof. But before anything else, exfoliate and moisturise your lips.

Now apply your liquid lipstick and wait for a few seconds to let it dry. Then apply some clear gloss (or a lip balm or a topper, whatever you like). You lips will look luscious and beautiful without the dry cakey look and feel of the matte lipsticks.

Turn your regular lipsticks into matte

If you love how the matte lips look but hate how the product feels on your lips, this hack is for you. Also, if you don’t own a matte lipstick but would love to have a certain shade in matte, this will work for you too. And it’s super simple. This old-school hack has been around since your grandma’s generation but not many knew about it until now. And for good reason – it works. Apply your favourite lipstick as you normally would. After this, place a tissue on your lips, and apply translucent powder over the tissue onto your lips. You'll be left with matte pout that will stay put all night.
