Saira Habib has been designing beautiful clothes since 2013. Saira’s entry into the fashion industry is only seven years old but her creatively designed ensembles speak eloquently that she is going to make her name big in the glam world. She launched her label SH in 2014.
According to Saira, she has always been inclined towards designing clothes. Her luxury pret range specialises in western wear, fusion and formal wear using versatile techniques including digital prints, embroidery, and embellishments on lace, silk, chiffon and organza. Working exclusively with pure fabrics Saira's multi-cultural perspective allows her to design within a western, eastern, and a universal context for silhouettes.
Her design themes however encompass an equally diverse array of vintage, Victorian, Moroccan, Persian and classic floral themes. Patterns are intricate with a touch of antique gold and the label is also admired for the detailed applique work done on natural white and ivory hues.
Saira has done exhibitions in Dubai, Bahrain, Riyadh and England. She has a state-of-the-art studio in Karachi. Additionally, the brand stocks in several cities in Pakistan and abroad. Saira has recently launched her new range of smart-casual clothing called ‘Staples’. This week You! talks to this talented designer who shares her experiences and beauty secrets with our readers….
You! How did you start?
Saira Habib: I have always had a passion for fashion in addition to possessing a business degree and thus, I decided to start my own label that would be unique from everything that was already out there. I started studying fashion and completed an online degree. In 2013, digital prints were an emerging trend in Western fashion and essentially unknown in Pakistan, so I conducted research into the field and learnt how to use photoshop in order to design my own prints.
You! What type of clothes you design for women?
SH: Statement pieces, formal and semi-formal. For formal clothes, the details are of the utmost importance, with an understated look. For casual wear, versatility is key so it can be used in a variety of different situations, from business-wear to day-time socialising. This year, we launched our new range of smart-casual clothing called Staples, which has had a great start.
You! Why do you think women should wear designer clothes?
SH: Most people prefer to buy designer clothes as they are aesthetically pleasing and save them the hassle of looking for the fabric, designing it themselves, and getting it stitched.
You! What do you like best about designing clothes?
SH: The satisfaction of seeing my designs come to life is definitely the best part. I find this journey very fulfilling, of taking my concept to a mood board and from there to a sketch, then to a digital design, and then to a final product.
You! What was the first outfit that you designed?
SH: A digital print jacket.
You! How would you define your own sense of style?
SH: My own personal style mostly comprises hues of white, combined with fawn and beige.
You! What is your signature embellishment and fabric choice?
SH: I do lots of crystal-work on whites and ivories. My choices of fabric are delicate and sheer.
You! What is the inspiration behind your latest collection?
SH: In the current pandemic, formal and lavish clothing isn't really needed. People are mostly only going out when necessary, such as going to work. Hence, my latest collection consists of smart-casual clothes.
You! Do you prefer sketching designs or actually constructing them?
SH: I prefer sketching. I like to take all of my ideas and transfer them from my mind to paper and then take it from there.
You! What seasonal looks and colours are you expecting this autumn/winter ?
SH: Lots of pastels
You! In your opinion, what is the biggest mistake a person can make while dressing here?
SH: Firstly, don't overdo it! Keep it simple and don't go overboard with embroidery and accessories. Secondly, you don't need to follow every trend. Keep your own body-shape in mind and go for what you know suits you rather than simply following the crowd.
You! What is the one piece of clothing that you shy away from wearing and why?
SH: I can't pinpoint just one piece of clothing. I keep away from anything that doesn't complement my body-type and personality.
You! What are the difficulties faced by designers in getting their work done?
SH: For one, the issues with electricity outages in factories can cause problematic delays. There are certain other issues that cause unnecessary delays, but you just need to stay focused and not let things bring you down.
You! How long does it usually take for you to design an outfit?
SH: It depends on whether my brain decides to cooperate or not!
You! What are the highs and lows of being a designer?
SH: A high point is definitely when you receive appreciation for your work. A low point is seeing people mindlessly copy your hard work.
You! Do you think there is potential for new designers in our fashion industry?
SH: Yes, definitely. There's always room for fresh talent.
You! What advice do you have for aspiring fashion designers?
SH: My advice is to be original. You can't rise if you stand with the crowd.
You! What kinds of future plans do you foresee for your brand?
SH: The current situation really puts a wrench into everyone's plans. Everything has been put on hold at the moment, but hopefully when things improve, we can implement our plan for further growth.
You! What are you currently working on?
SH: We are working on our smart-casual range: Staples Volume 2.
