Whether your skincare routine consists of 15 steps or five, there is one in particular that should always be a priority: serum. This essential product offers more targeted results, potent formulations, and customisation options. So, what exactly is a serum? According to Elle magazine, a serum is usually a liquid or gel containing high concentrations of skin actives, which are able to penetrate deeper than other topicals (like moisturisers) with content occlusive that prevent deeper penetration.
You’re never too young to start using a serum, and they’re the best way to target specific skin concerns due to their high concentration and potency. It’s important when choosing a serum to know which skin concern, you’re hoping to target. Most basic serums contain a combination of antioxidants, which will brighten the skin. Looking for something moisturising? A hydrating serum should contain hyaluronic acid and peptide. Hyluaronic acid keeps skin plump and glowing – and basically allows your skin to repair itself easier. If anti-aging is your main concern, a serum that contain retinols (which increase skin cell turnover), glycolic acid, and Vitamin C will be best for you.
Applying serum twice a day immediately after cleansing your skin to your face and neck works wonders. Since serums are so lightweight, they’re easy to layer. Apply yours before any SPF or makeup. Yes, serums tend to be on the pricier end of the skincare spectrum. But for a pretty decent reason! Remember that bit about being super concentrated and potent? It is definitely worth the price. Whether you're already a super fan of serums or ready to try one for the first time, check out these options to help you get the skin of your dreams…

Doesn't serum expire really fast?
Certain potent ingredients often found in serum can become unstable once they come in contact with air. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C), for instace, can oxidize and lose efficacy over time.
But thanks to science, modified versions of the ingredient (that are water-soluble, etc.) last longer so they can do your skin more good. Best rule of thumb is to store your vial in a cool, dry place (obviously) and use it up within six months to a year.
