This week You! talks to expert beauticians regarding the importance of applying foundation during winters...

Foundation is an integral part of makeup as it covers imperfections, provide a more even skin tone, and give the desired finish - matte or dewy. A good base helps other products such as blush, concealer, and highlighters go on much more smoothly. However, for all beauty conscious women worldwide, winter is not our favourite time of year as our skin tends to get pretty ugly pretty quickly. The dry air and biting winds sucks up all the moisture from your flawless complexion, leaving it dull, cracked, blotchy and flaky. So, the use of foundation becomes more important during winters. Rather than matte formulas, you want your winter foundation to come full of skin-loving ingredients to reinject moisture to provide skin with that ethereal dewiness it so desperately needs. In this regard, we asked some of the industry’s most coveted makeup artists to share with our readers the many benefits of applying foundation for attaining a hydrated, protected winter glow.

1. It’s not necessary to change your foundation unless you have a very dry skin. If you have oily skin then you don’t need to change your foundation. A foundation which is rich in moisture can give your skin an extra dose of hydration to give you a smooth, even finish.

2. The best way to apply foundation in winter is when you get out of shower apply a bit of toner on your skin then apply a hydrating moisturiser. Make sure to apply a hydrated primer and then apply foundation in order to save your skin from dryness.

3. Best foundation for winter are L’Oreal lumi 2 match; Tint Touch by YSL, Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation, Revlon’s ColorStay foundation and Nars winter foundation. These are all oil based foundations and give a flawless effect.

4. You can always mix the serum with your foundation but it should be of a good quality.

5. Pond’s cold cream is really nice for winter, it’s excellent. Always keep Baby lips in your purse, it’s hydrating too and you don’t need a lipstick. Get a good face wash which is not oil-free, you need to change your face wash according to the weather. Body butters are available in the market that keeps your skin hydrated. Keep small hand cream in your purse so that when your hands get dry, you just use it.

1. Certainly, in summers we use water-based foundation but in winters the foundation has to be oil-based.

2. Armani and Mac’s winter foundations are the best. My personal favourite is Mud products for winter.

3. You cannot apply foundation on your naked skin. So first clean and moisturise your skin, then apply primer and foundation.

4. Yes, you can mix serum with your foundation but it is optional.

5. Clean your skin before going to bed and apply rich night creams from Dermalogica.

1. If you are using a matte textured foundation then it is ideal to swap the product for a dewy finish as shine is no issue in the winter months. Another option is to use tinted moisturiser instead of foundation if your skin tends to get too dry.

2. My favourite winter foundations are Giorgio Armani lasting silk UV foundation; Maybelline Fit Me Dewy plus smooth foundation and Bobby Brown Moisture rich foundation.

3. Always apply moisturiser before applying foundation. Applying a primer also helps with smooth flawless application of foundation. Another option is to use a cream-based formula. You can even mix argan or rose oil with your foundation for a nice glowy finish.

4. A drop or two of serum mixed in foundation changes the texture and is ideal for winter.

5. The skin tends to be paler once the summer tan is gone. So it is a good idea to mix a lighter shade into your already existing foundation. Make sure to exfoliate once or twice a week to get rid of sluggish skin.

1. Yes, you need to change your foundation as skin is drier in winters and you have to use a oil based foundation. One of the simplest ways to cover up the seasonal damage is by switching up your foundation to a hydrating one which will give you all the added moisture and nourishment your dry skin needs.

2. The best way to apply foundation during winter is to follow the skin care regimen which is washing the face, applying the toner and good moisturiser and then apply the foundation. If you apply the foundation directly on your face then it will become cakey.

Your skin should be moisturised before applying the foundation. For a smooth finish, add a dot of clear gloss in your foundation, mix it well and then apply it. My biggest note is to blend, blend, and blend. It will give a very dewy look.

3. What I really like is very reasonable BB cream by J. It is very light and very smooth.

4. You can mix serum with foundation. Make sure to use a moisturising and oily serum.

5. In winter, it is very important to keep your skin moisturised all the time because winter is the time when your skin is dry and you can easily develop fine lines. So, it’s important to use a nice face wash, and a toner and a good moisturiser according to your skin type. For hands and feet, use sheer butter cream.

1. In winter, you can change your foundation but it depends. If you have a dry skin then use oil based foundation. Swapping your foundation formula in winter will give you an extra dose of nourishment, right when your skin needs it the most.

2. Best Foundations for winter are Maybelline Fit Me, Bobby Brown Moisture Rich and Mac Studio Face and Body Foundation.

3. The best way of applying foundation during winter is to prepare your skin first - cleansing and moisturise your skin properly. Don’t forget to use primer before applying foundation. If your skin is really dry then mix a little bit of oil and cream in your foundation.

4. Yes, you can mix serum with foundation but use just a few drops. It depends on the foundation. If it’s already oily then you don’t need to mix serum in the foundation.

5. In winter, you need to take extra care of your skin to stay clear of dry patches. Follow your cleansing, moisturising regimen vigorously. Stick with a mild facial cleanser. Exfoliate on a regular basis to get rid of unwanted flaky winter skin.
