It’s easier to go crazy with your nails. You can make any outfit look great with a powerful statement nail. This week check out the hottest nail polish trends of this season...

Taking care of your nails and how great they look is one of the most refreshing feelings. That’s why a lot of us like to take extra care of our nails’ health and have fun with nail polish options, colours and designs. Some girls take away trendy prints or fresh silhouettes from fashion week runway shows. Our eyes tend to drift toward the details... this year has seen a more grown up and curated nail, it’s all in the detail. We have seen strong and bold colours with clever details such as sculpted textures, animal prints, and punctured tips. Having a statement nail that is more like jewellery is going to be big this year.

Also, as the leaves change colours, so too must your nails. From geometrics to glittery cuticles, this fall, brights are staying bright, while classic neutrals are being replaced with more pigmented mauve and terracotta shades.

Little history:

Nail polish as we know was invented in the 1920s with the introduction of nitrocellulose as an ingredient, but decorating nails was not a new concept. Nail varnish originated in China in 3000 B.C. The Chinese used a mixture made with egg whites, beeswax, Arabic gum and gelatine to colour their nails. Around the same time, the Egyptians started colouring their nails with reddish-brown stains derived from henna. Even though examples of nail polish can be found in many ancient civilizations, it was the modern times when these cosmetic products reached its popularity. In the 19th century, women used to polish their nails with a cloth and oil which would give them a shiny appearance and a red tint.

Modern nail polish is a by-product of car paint. Car paint was invented in the 1920’s and it inspired Michelle Menard, a French makeup artist who was working for the Charles Revson company, who wondered if nail polish could be created using the same technique. The Revson company, that had then changed its name to Revlon, started selling the first nail polish in hair and beauty salons in 1932 and in 1937 the product became available in department store and drugstores. Revlon soon became the leader in the cosmetics industry, alongside companies such as Cutex, Avon, Elka, Blue Bird and Glazo.

Nail polish trends: Red, Red, And More Red: It’s a classic for a reason, yup, red is back and officially here to stay. It is so wearable, and there is nobody that a slick of bold, bright, high-gloss scarlet doesn’t suit.

Half Moon: No more French tips, this year nail art is all about the cuticle half-moon. Whether super subtle or bold and bright with clashing shades of pink and purple, half-moon nails are here to stay.

Bring on the Bling: A perfectly polished nail, enhanced with an embellishment of your choice makes a bold statement - think jewels for the fingertips! Try this trick: add a small bead of acrylic under the embellishment for that long-lasting look. Crystals and flowers are very trendy for the fall season. OPI Red and Black Onyx are great shades to make any embellishment pop!

Jelly Nails: This season a new nail trend has come to the surface that you might be interested to try out. Jelly Nails are all the rage this season. This trend is all about nail polish shades that have jelly bright colours. The jelly effect is not just from the colours but the look itself. Jelly nails are transparent to give the ultimate jelly-like look.

Geometric: Get creative with mid-century-inspired geometric artwork on your nails. Use shades of your favourite colours to complement your next outfit.

Flip-side manis: The long, almond-shaped nails are really big right now, so they allow enough real estate for you to embellish underneath your nail. This is a new twist on nail art, which is such a big trend right now. You don’t have to get this done. You can do it yourself at home. Attach a small jewel or stud with spray glue, or go for bright colours that complement the front side. Glitters and confetti and all kind of stuff are happening on the underside. You can wear a plain colour then have fun on the back.

It takes two: Two-toned nails are everywhere at all the major fashion weeks’ runway this year. Whether bold or monochrome, add a little extra interest to your next manicure.

Cute-icles: Now you can accessorise your nails too! Paint your nails in your favourite colour, and then line your cuticles with an accent shade. Add a little glitter to take it to the next level.

Oval it: From a classic curve to a vicious point, oval nails will take your Instagram cred’ to the next level. They’re feminine and flattering on every hand, and in every colour!

Crisp white: Nothing says ‘holiday resort’ like a touch of nautical white. Pay close attention to your nail shape and polish application to avoid looking like you’ve used whiteout on your nails.

Coordinate: Duplication is dead. Coordinate your nail polish with mix-and-match designs that are different on each finger but complement each other. It’s like a work of art on your hands!

Barely there: Strip it back to minimal nails with a hint of colour to brighten up your look. Perfect to add a touch of colour to a dainty outfit.

Shine Line: Deck out your nail art with metallic strips to gleam and shine. Use them as a standalone feature, or work them in to your geometric nail art. We love gold and rose gold!

Chrome: Chrome nails are the party nails of this season! Throw away your compact mirror because you’ll now be able to check your lipstick in the reflection of your nails.

Shimmery nails: Shimmer gives a frosted and diffused shine. They’re not hard to remove the way glitter can be, and they help create an elevated look.

Five-point nail polish agenda:

1. Get the surface super-clean. Any trace of dust, moisture, or leftover polish will keep the new nail polish from sticking

2. Before you paint, you should also swipe clean nails with a cotton ball soaked in nail polish remover.

3. Never miss the basecoat. A bottom layer gives the polish something to latch onto. A base coat is soft and sticky, so that it can expand and contract with your nails and help colour adhere.

4. Apply your polish in three narrow, even strokes, one down the middle and one down each side. Then wait two minutes before applying a second coat. And don’t goop it on: The thicker the layer of polish, the likelier it is to peel.

5. Once your manicure is on, seal it with a slow-setting topcoat.
