Some people say talent is God’s gift. A person is said to be talented if he/she possesses some awesome ability in a particular field. Everyone is talented in one way or another, however, nurturing and utilising it to the best is certainly a challenge. And of course, if one has a desire to highlight his/her talent, competitions and recognitions serve as the best platforms for admiring people who are skilled and hardworking.

Following the same vein, Nippon Paint Pakistan took the initiative of bringing the biggest design competition of the year called the ‘Asia Young Designer Award’ (AYDA) to Pakistan, where leading professional architects, interior designers and design students came together to form a close-knit design community. The competition was held at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club, Lahore recently, incorporating leaders of the architectural and design community including distinguished IAP (Institute of Architects Pakistan), members and pioneers like Ar. Akeel Bilgrami, IAP President Ar. Ali Zafar Qazi and Chairman BAE-IAP Ar. Arshad Faruqi. The judges of the competition were none other than the eminent Ar. Raza Ali Dada, Ar. Raza Ali Khan and Ar. Rashid Rasheed.

AYDA serves as a platform to inspire architecture and interior design students to develop their skills through cross-learning opportunities and networking with key industry players as well as fellow architecture and interior design peers in the region. Spanning across 15 Asian countries, AYDA has established a close-knit design community comprising of professional architects, interior designers, industry associations, partners, design schools, alumni and design students.

Speaking about the event, the Marketing Manager of Nippon, Mariam Naeem Siddiqi said, “We are proud to take an initiative like AYDA. We wanted to not just be a paint company but to be a contributor to the society as well, and what is better than nurturing the new generation and making them realize of their own potential. There is so much talent in this generation that it would be remiss to not provide a platform for it. With this year’s AYDA, we saw how the design and architectural community is growing in Pakistan and we aim on facilitating further development so it can get bigger and better”.

The winners of the competition were Osama Jamil - who received the honorary mention, Akhyar Razzaq - who won the Silver Award and Syeda Aimen Fatima - who secured the Gold Award. The event was a success and a large number of magazine editors, bloggers and media personalities attended it.
