Tasty, spicy, packed with flavour... curries from across the globe are mouth-watering and exotic, as each region has its own variations and peculiarities. The word ‘curry’ basically refers to a dish that has been prepared in sauce or gravy using complex combinations of spices or herbs. Do you know where the word curry originated from? Even though, the origination of the word is still debated, many people claim that it was derived from a Tamil word, ‘kari’, meaning spiced sauce. Some assert that curry could be derived from the Hindi word for a wok-shaped cooking vessel, ‘kara’. However, one of the more interesting hypotheses is that the word is actually derived from the Old English word for cooking, ‘cury’. Wondering why we are talking about curries? Well, recently, we got the chance to taste different kinds of curries from the Sub-Continent, Pacific Island and South-East Asian countries at Asia Live restaurant, Avari Towers, Karachi. Thanks to our hospitality industry, now we don’t have to travel far and wide to enjoy authentic dishes. Regarding the festival, Avari Towers’ Director Food and Beverage, Mr. Shahbaz Rana said, “We always focus on introducing diverse flavours from around the globe. And with the ‘Curries of the World Food Festival’ we wanted to offer refined dining for all the foodies out there who love to try different cuisines.”
As always the ambiance of the restaurant was just perfect for food enthusiasts to indulge in scrumptious curries. ‘Curries of the World’ included special curries from Pakistan, China, India, Jamaica, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Myanmar.
Now, the main highlight - food! The extensive buffet offered a variety of delectable salads and appetizers. The main menu included Indian Vindaloo Curry, Goan Prawn Curry, Fish Masala, Ayam Masak Merah, Mutton Royal Quorma, Butter Chicken, Sri Lankan Chicken Curry, Amritsari Dal Makhni, Thai Chicken Curry and much much more. The interesting bit about the festival was that a few signature curries were being prepared live coupled with live tandoori assortments of breads. And then it was time for some sweet treats. The dessert table also offered various kinds of sweet delights - from desi mithais to continental desserts - that were just out of this world.
Sorry guys, the festival is over! But those who tried out ‘Curries of the World’ will vouch that the festival was surely a delightful experience.
