Have you ever had a chance to experience a live performance? Be it concert or a play, nothing can beat a live gig. And when it comes to theatrical presentation, it is way more powerful than any other form of entertainment. The characters on stage are not only relatable but offer a more direct form of communication with the audience. Hence, theatre has a stronger impact and the power to influence people’s thought process. And this is exactly how we felt after watching one of the recent theatre productions ‘Date Night’, by duo Shaan and Dawar Lashari, held at the Karachi Arts Council, which was on till August 27, 2017.
‘Date Night’ takes its script from Derek Benfield and is set in an expensive mini boutique hotel somewhere in the suburbs of England. Dubbed as a musical comedy, the play tells the story of two well-off married couples, who go on a trip to England. And it is there that they get a surprise of their lifetime, as both the couples are cheating on their spouses.
There were three entertaining dance sequences along with feisty punch lines and comical situations. It was a fast paced show where one saw a smooth transition from one scene to another. The entire crew, Shaan Lashari, Waleed Zaidi, Shah Fahad, Mahnoor Khan and Sheherzade Noor Peerzada, performed brilliantly in a story filled with situational hazards, hilarious cover-ups and improbable situations. However, we felt that there was room for improvement as far as dance sequences were concerned.
According to director Dawar Lashari, “The entire cast worked really hard for this play, and we were all happy to receive such an overwhelming response, and love from the people of Karachi. The whole idea of the play was to entertain people and make them laugh, and we were glad we could do that.”
