From time to time in our ‘beauty talk’ section, we feature different designers who share their experiences, achievements and beauty secrets with us. This month You! talks to Lahore-based designer Sumayrah Khan...

Sumayrah Khan’s obsession for fashion led her to create beautiful ensembles. Sumayrah’s label ‘Qashang’ comes out from a Persian term which means chic. She has been designing clothes for modern women since 2012. Recently, she has launched her campaign ‘Distinguished Qashang Ladies On Wheels’ which aims to empower women - giving them an equal opportunity to acquire a mode of transport like bikes that is not a norm in Pakistan. Here is a tete a tete with the designer...

You! From a radio jockey to a designer; how has been the journey so far?

Sumayrah Khan: My journey from being a television host /actor /radio jockey to becoming a designer has been good with its own share of ups and downs which is part of life. I always set goals that help me put things into perspective. I take no one as my competition. Instead, I believe everyone in their own way can pave way for themselves and make a difference!

You! What is the core of your brand?

S.K: The core of my brand is to promote individuality and acceptance of every woman. The ultimate focus is to be the trendsetter rather than following what everyone else is making or designing. Even if that means to cater to a certain niche who understands such principles of looking different and standing out in a good way rather than blending with the rest.

You! What are the latest summer trends?Beauty talk

S.K: Well, I believe that these days simple is the new black, which means being minimalist is trending. There is more emphasis on structured clothing, scarves and sneakers. And robes are making a statement this season.

You! Your initiative is aimed at empowering women, how did the idea come about?

S.K: The brand’s identity since day one has been representing forward thinking women who are all out to break the norms. I was supposed to do a shoot using hand painted vintage Vespas initially but when I went to ‘Distinguished Ladies On Wheels’ first trial session, I realized something more meaningful can be done. Hence this idea came about. We have collaborated with Tayyaba Tariq. She broke the norm to fulfill her dream of becoming a female rider and drove her Suzuki Gs-150 bike through the picturesque northern areas to Pak- China border. In this campaign she is reaching out to forward thinking ladies to join her and learn this great skill set for them.

You! Tell us about your new collection?

S.K: This capsule collection is focused on ‘50s fashion for both eastern and western wear.  I chose to lay emphasis on that era as the scooty craze swept the whole of Europe during that time and gained lot of popularity. Also during World War II while the men were away, women began to gain independence that was rare before the war. This is the time when women empowerment started paving its way. Also it promotes organic fashion, for a better environment. It’s inspired from a different era and time yet it’s very contemporary and very much wearable. I have designed organic cotton sarees paired with fusion tops/ kimonos, wrap top with ghararas, cotton jumpsuit and kimonos. ‘50s inspired hair and makeup has been done to perfection by team at Sante salon.

BEAUTY CORNER

You! What is one cosmetic you cannot do without?     Beauty talk

S.K: Mascara is a MUST!

You! When stepping out, do you wear make up all the time?

S.K: Not at all, I mostly like to pull the no makeup look with no makeup at all.

You! When it comes to cosmetics, which brands do you usually use?

S.K: Not too specific about one brand but I do have a mix. Locally I absolutely love Massarat Misbah Makeup, they have the best base/foundation. Other than that M.A.C, Lancome, Sephora and Philosophy.

S.K: Oiling my hair & body massage.

You! Do you use anti-ageing creams?

S.K: No. I strongly believe it’s a big fat scam, watch out!

You! Do you believe in treatments like Botox?

S.K: I am not in favour of it nor do I have anything against Botox but I believe people should feel good about themselves whether it’s with or without treatments like Botox. It’s not a necessity and one should remember that.
